Bed 2: Potatoes

Bed 2
Potatoes:
These potatoes were planted on the 26 Aug 07. Although not listed as good companions I planted the Goldfinger Zucchinis next to them because it was the only bed ready for early planting on the 8th Sept 07.

I chose to plant tubers that were left over from last years crops of:
Blue Sapphire (blue skin and flesh)
Royal Blue (blue skin white fleshed)
Red Star (red skin white fleshed)
Some of the bigger Kipflers from last year's crops.

Diggers club recommends planting fresh certified seed every 2-3 years to prevent a build up of disease. Last year I purchased fresh tubers from Diggers Club and these showed no sign of disease.

Growing Requirements:
Latin Name: Solanum tuberosum
Family: Solanaceae
Sow: Spring/Summer after frost
Soil: They like a fertile, well drained, humus/compost rich soil.
pH: 5 - 6.4
Spacing: 30cm apart in rows.

My Notes:
Don't grow on beds where other members of the solanacea family have grown previously. This includes Tomatoes, Capsicum, Chilli, Eggplants.
Hill up soil around growing plants to prevent them becoming green in the sunlight. Do not eat green potatoes as they are poisonous.
These were planted earlier than usual this year and covered by shadecloth on cold nights.
Had drippers attached and have been watered via a 30litre ex-home-brew tub.

They were planted into a trench filled with nettles and compost.

Good Companions:
Peas
Beans
Nasturtiums
Horseradish (potted)
Eggplant

Bad Companions:
Apples
Cherries
Cucumbers
Sunflowers
Tomatoes
Raspberries
Rosemary
